Beauty Unframed author Lisa Elmers writes about life, loveliness, and seeing something where you thought there was nothing.

the kiss

the kiss

where did we get “the kiss”?

is it essence, nature

this soft-on-softness,

wetness-to-wet?

it’s fine, and yet –

isn’t it something social

& so visibly so

this reproduction of reproducing

the silent, or sighing

parrot-play-acting

flesh mirror of the silver screen?

do we kiss

like this

only to form our forms to

that – squirming – icon

its lunges & sucks, its strange

behavior of teeth

& of tongues?

how would we know

the lips go just so

& the head tilts like that

& the nose gets pressed flat

if we hadn’t ever sat

in the televised glow?
